I know, its from FOX news:

I am curious how vegans raise their kids. Do you all believe the kids should be raised from infancy on a vegan diet? Is this couple on track with how they (vegans) think or is this an isolated case?

Interesting case. Are the couples criminals.... or the equivalent of religious fanatics... or both? What kind of sentence should they have received for their actions in strict observance of vegan principles?

Vegan Couple Gets Life in Prison After Baby Dies of Starvation
Wednesday, May 09, 2007

E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
ATLANTA — A vegan couple were sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the mandatory sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple were found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

But prosecutors said the couple intentionally neglected their child and refused to take him to the doctor even as the baby's body wasted away.

"No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians,' that's not the issue in this case," said prosecutor Chuck Boring. "The child died because he was not fed. Period."

Hi Jumpin',

Well, I'm a vegetarian and in between our pagan, free-sex, quilting contests and our tree-hugging, granola, peyote raves, we always find the energy to starve a few kids to death. NOT!

A babies natural diet is human milk. Why and how these vegan idiots did this is ... who the hells knows. I'm speechless. (Well, almost.)

It's an ISOLATED CASE. And of course FOX "News" makes it a headline up there with global events. The story FOX "News" won't tell you is about the redneck couple that fed their baby only beer. Damn, sad story.

Hey, wait -- we get free sex? That information wasn't included in my welcome-wagon package. Where exactly do I apply for this benefit?

Actually, this brings up an interesting technical point. I met a 1st time-vegan mother last summer who was so hardcore she wouldn't watch movies (something about animal products in film), but she breast-fed, like, constantly. Now that I'm thinking about it, the character Lisa on "Six Feet Under" breast fed, too. So, based on this flimsy evidence, I'm guessing that mothers-milk is somehow exempted...

Hey wtf? free sex? I wasn't told about this perk. Hmmmm.... Naw not even for that.

Peyote raves and free sex!? I demand to know why I wasn't made aware of these fringe benefits!

You could have just said that in the animal rights discussion! Sign me up! :p

why did you send out the bat signal for "V"???? when you already posted the answer to your question???

and in case you are wondering, in 13 years off meat and milk I have never been healthier and I have never been concerned with if I was getting enough protein and where I might get it. As I read once, "if you are getting enough food and eating a variety of foods, you are getting enough protein".

But don't ask me about feeding an infant.

The only thing vegans aren't accused of is eating babies, for obvious reasons.

Although...

Jane! V! I bet you love the taste of BABYcorn :p

Vegetarianism is not my thing, I don't have the discipline for it. Still the public attitude towards vegans is simply ridiculous.

Edit: Perhaps a tv/radio ad campaign with the peyote raves and orgies would improve your PR. I certainly say it sweetens the deal :D It reminded me of those "100% vegetarian" T-shirts with a marijuana leaf on the back.

true indeed. This article is a good example. Since the jury agreed with the prosecution that the parents were intentially negligent and the child was starved, the headline should read "Negligent parents get life in prison" not "Vegans get life in prison"

but this new campaign Jane thought up of free sex and a granola bar for every new-born vegetarian should get a lot more people on board.

Good point -V-.

Another point or quandary I have is a bit oblique, but see if you get my drift. Fox "News" is right-wing. Right? It headlines "Vegans Get Life in Prison", obviously to vitiate vegans & vegetarians. It's a complete aberration. But in my mind it indicates a natural social division of sorts.

Vegans/ vegatarians are liberal. Are there no or few conservative vegetarians? It seems like that's my experience. I don't think I've ever met a conservative vegetarian. Interesting.

And following along those lines is there a template we can correlate that compares diet to political bias?

If vegan is all the way to the left of a chart and flesh-eaters all the way to the right, does that mean the more vegetables you consume makes you more liberal and the more meat you consume makes you more conservative?

Can we correlate the effect of diet? Seeing that more conservatives are pro-war, bellicose and hawkish and more liberals are pro-peace, nonbelligerent and dovish ... is the diet a factor?

Does a vegan/ vegetarian diet make you peaceful?

Does a diet of eating flesh make you aggressive?

It's certainly true in the Animal Kingdom.

Is it true in the POL Kingdom?

Just curious. :sunny: (Jane loves that sunny face. Where's that lettuce I was nibbling on?)

So how does this work Jane? we get vouchers? where and when can we redeem them? and most importantly, with whom? :p

If you had told me I was trading the pleasures of meat for the pleasures of flesh... :D :p

Edit: Personally I'm aggresive but I can keep it on check with some effort. Who knows, maybe if I ate more chop suey and less kung pao I would be more zen.

speaking for Jane, i believe she would wisely say that if you become a vegetarian you will become more slim, youthful and so damn sexy that abundantly free sex will surely avail itself to you.

Regarding politics and vegetarianism, surely there are some conservatives who have such a strong sense of looking out for #1 that they are willing to forego the pleasure of meat in the hopes of living their self centered lives as long as possible.

On the other hand there are some liberal vegetarians who don't realize to what extent their actions are also looking out for #2 - society (read "Diet for a New Planet" or my summation of it for details on how what you eat can solve most of the world's problems) and #3 - animals.
