-V-, I wanted you to know your post changed me. After seeing as much of the animal abuse as I could stand to take in that is shown in the video, that wasn't all that much, and considering how eating meat contributes to other people's behavior and consciousness, most notably the animal farmers and animal farm and slaughter house workers, I decided I HAVE to be vegetarian for animals, people and consciousness. Therefore, I desire and will to be vegetarian.

Guru Deva:

"To get a human body is a rare thing - Make full use of it. There are four million kinds of lives which a soul can gather. After that, one gets a chance to be human - to get a human body. Therefore, one should not waste this chance. Every second in a human life is valuable. If you don't value this, then you will have nothing in hand and will weep in the end. Because you are human God has given you power to think and decide what is good and what is bad. Therefore, you can do the best kind of action. You should never consider yourself weak or a fallen creature. Whatever may have happened to you up to now may be because you didn't know. But, now be careful. After a human body, if you don't reach God, then you have sold a diamond at the price of spinach."

-V-, you have shown me in your post that spinach is on that path to reaching God. Blessed is that knowing.

Yes, -V-, sex is an effective motivator in getting important information across as sex in the video, "What the Bleep Do We Know?!" did - Ha!

Jen, i knew you would venture in where others dare not go, bless your immortal soul. Thanks for the terrific quote.

Yes, all the nakedness was a bit much but if that's what it takes to get the truth out so be it! ;)

p.s.
it's only about 10 minutes long, but if you didn't make it thru to the dirty pig scenes you missed the climax...

Good for you, Jennifer! Vegetarianism is the way to go. You have made a wise and ethical decision, extending your sense of compassion to our animal friends. Good luck with your new diet.

i have a really long reply to this thread that exceeds the 6000 character limit allowed. i felt so strongly about it that i decided to divide it up and post it anyway. hope i don't get in trouble for breaking the rules.

here's part 1...

i too have recently decided to become a vegan. at first, i planned only on basic vegetarinism, still eating dairy and eggs, to achieve better health. having energy/mood/sleep problems and being very overweight mandated it. at this time however, i can be nothing but vegan.

i grew up on my grandparent's small dairy farm in rural north-western michigan. everyone in that area farmed, either animals or cash-crops. our milk cows were treated very well, and we had the same ones throughout my entire childhood. we even named them!

in the 80's, small dairy farms became obsolete. the only way to make money was by milking hundreds of animals. our farm went out of business, and the cows were sold to larger operations.

i never saw the abuse depicted in the videos posted on this thread. we didn't slaughter or force our animals into unatural milk or calf production. i never had a problem eating meat, and always had a practical perspective toward animals. i had always been told that they existed for our consumption, and i believed it. i always rolled my eyes at those hippies crabbing about animal abuse because i had never seen it. i had heard about feed-lots and slaughter houses, but since i had never seen anything like that myself, never seriously looked into it. how bad could it be, right?

lately however, as i changed my diet and started doing research on vegetarianism, the brutalities of the meat industry came into shocking focus. the thing that made me cry the hardest was the fact that most of the hamburger i was eating came from dairy cows like the ones i had grown up with. tortured their whole lives and unspeakably murdered without a second thought. how can there be so many human beings able to do that?!?!

the day before i saw the videos here, i was reading a book called Skinny Bitch. the sarcastic humor about good health and weight-loss being simply a garbage in-garbage out concept was right up my alley. i had no idea it included a chapter on veganism and animal cruelty, and reading it instantly changed my entire perspective on eating meat. i'd like to share some excerpts from that chapter now.

"human protocol (federal requirement) calls for animals to be stunned before they are slaughtered. for cows, this means getting a metal bolt shot into the skull and then retracted. when done peroperly, using working equipment, this renders the cow unconscious. but time is money, and slughterhouses operate at lightning speeds, some killing one animal every three seconds. because thousands of frithgened, struggling cows are not easy to stun, it is extremely common for a stunner to miss his mark. panicked hogs, also difficult to hit, are stunned with an electric device. and if the jolt is too high, it bruises and bloodies the hogs' flesh which is bad for business. because business comes first on factory farms, the jold is lowered, despite the fact that it doesn't properly stun the hogs.

stunned or not, cows and hogs are then strung up from the ceiling by a chain attached to their hind legs. in theory, while they dangle there, they are supposed to be unconscious. but often they are fully awake, struggling, screaming, and fearfully staring at the workers while they have their throats slit open. next, they travel along a bleed rail, where they should bleed to death. but again, these large struggling animals are hard targets for the workers who cut their throats, and don't always get a good cut. so next, often still alive, they go to the head skinners where the skin is sliced from their heads. to avoid getting injured by the frantically kicking animal, workers will sometimes sever the spinal cord with a knife blow to the back of the head. this paralyzed the animal below the neck so the worker is safe, but the animal can still feel the skin being sliced from their faces. next, their legs and heads are chopped off, their entrails removed, and finally, they are split in half. hogs are often dunked fully conscious into boiling water to remove the hair from their bodies.

here's part 2...

there is no federal requirement to stun chickens and turkeys, but since its easier to handle an inert animal, their heads are sometimes dragged through a water bath that is electrically charged. this paralyzes them, but does not render them unconsious. they are suspended upside down, and a machine slashes their throats at the rate of thousands per hour. next, they are dunked in scalding water to loosen their feathers. again, they are supposed to be dead at this point, but if the slashing machine misses its mark, or the chickens haven't bled to death, they are boiled alive. then they are placed into a series of machines that literally beat the feathers off them, still alive and having just been scalded.

in egg laying factories, male baby chicks are completely useless to farmers because they don't produce eggs. workers snatch up chicks speeding by on conveyer belts, quickly glance at their underbellies, and then toss the usless males into the garbage. millions of male baby chicks are piled into garbage dumpsters, left to die."

Gail Eisnitz, chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association and author of the book Slaughterhouse, interviewed dozens of slaughterhouse workers thoughout the country. every single one admitted to abusing animals or neglecting to report those who did. the following quotes are taken from these interviews:

"i seen them take those stunners...they're about as long as yardsticks...and shove it up a hog's ass. cows too. and in their ears, their eyes, and down their throats. they'll be squealing and they'll just shove it right in there."

"hogs get stressed out pretty easy. if you prod them too much they have heart attacks. if you get a hog in a chute that's had the shit prodded out of him and has a heart attach or refused to move, you take a meat hook and hook it into his bunghole. you're dragging these hogs alive, and a lot of times the meat hook rips out of the bunghole. i've seen thighs completely ripped open and intestines come out."

"pigs on the kill floor have come up and nuzzled me like a puppy. two minutes later i had to kill them. beat them to death with a pipe."

"ive seen one guy kick them, fork them, use anything he can get his hands on to kill them. he's already broken three pitchforks so far this year. he doesn't care if he hits their eyes, head, butt. he stabs so hard he busts the wooden handles, and he clubs them over the back. i've seen guys shove broomsticks up cows' behinds. screwing them with a broom."

"one time i took my knife --its sharp enough-- and sliced off the end of a hog's nose, just like a piece of bologna. it went crazy for a few seconds, then stood there staring at me and looking stupid. then i took a handful of salt brine and ground it into his nose. now that hog really went nuts, pushing its nose all over the place. i still had a bunch of salt left in my hand --i was wearing rubber gloves-- and i stuck the salt right up the hog's ass. that poor hog didn't know whether to shit or go blind."

"nobody knows who's responsible for correcting animal abuse at these plants. the USDA does zilch."

besides cruelty, there's the contamination issue to be considered as well. feces, urine, vomit, pus, flies, rats, cockroaches, and rotting dead animals cover the walls and floors of these processing plants. dead, diseased, and infectious animals are process and stamped USDA. rotten meat is mixed with fresh meat and put into baby food.

the day after i read this chapter about the meat industry in Skinny Bitch, i saw the videos on this thread. apparently it was meant to be, as i had no idea a thread about orgasms would be about vegetarianism. thanks for appealing to my libido, V!!!

anyway........this is where our meat, eggs, and cheese comes from. this is why i could never put another bite of any of them into my mouth ever again.

sorry this post got so long!

bless you, ofer, and thanks for cryingoutloud! Millions of animals are doing just that every day but their screams go unheard until people like you have the courage to do and speak up for what is right.
