someone recently told me that there's some obscure US federal policy stating that if an officially declared war is in progress at the time of a presidential election here, the election can be skipped and whoever is in office remains there even if it's their second term. anyone know anything about this?
welcome to POL ofer.
I had also heard that the BushCo was trying to work on an extension based on war but I doubt that there is any real legal foundation for it, and even if there was the American citizens would not tolerate it at this point. The fact that his days are numbered is one of the things preventing impeachment from moving forward.
Besides, I don't think the U.S. ever officially declared "War" on Iraq. Now, we're involved in an unofficial occupation in the middle of their unofficial civil war.

yep. undeclared war. but i've been hearing about big deployments in iraq set for november '08, which is when the next election would take place to put bush out of office. if there was indeed an extension policy, it would be a perfect time to officially declare war, and very convenient to have some pre-established activities to act as a smokescreen. it all lines up so well.....i hope you're right about it having no legal foundation and that the american people would not tolerate it. after the last 2 elections, i have fairly serious doubts.
