There's a huge new media scandal breaking this morning, and the headline so far -- that a much-used consultant to ABC News published a phony interview with Barak Obama -- may well be the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The news about now ex-ABC consultant Alexis Debat (left) is just dribbling out, but I'm surprised people haven't been connecting the dots. This post will seek to connect a couple of them.

Simply put, Debat -- a former French defense official who now works at the (no, you can't make these things up) Nixon Center -- has also been a leading source in pounding the drumbeat for war in Iran, and directly linked to some bizarre stories -- reported on ABC's widely watched news shows, and nowhere else -- that either ratcheted up fears of terrorism or that could have stoked new tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Ironically, while Debat's alleged specialty is foreign affairs, it was a foray into American presidential politics that brought this budding scandal out into the open. This from today's article by Howard Kurtz in the Washington Post:

I didn’t know about Alexis Debat, and can’t say if he’s just an opportunist or meant to «*hype*».
What I know is about a long tradition of French conservatives to hype. They started with the creation of the GRECE in 1968 Groupe de Recherches et d’Etudes sur la Civilisation Européenne
and their revue «*Nouvelle Ecole*» . Their thesis was that the condition to achieve their political success was to fight on the cultural level. They wanted to «*use the growing vulnerability of the public opinion to a metapolitical message, which will be as more efficient, well received and assimilated and suggestive as it won’t be clearly perceived as such*» . I feel my English is awful, but the concept is ok.
They wrote «* in no case (…) our political objective must be revealed (…) we must present ( )as an intellectual and moral revolution ( )must be careful about the vocabulary used*» Their aim «*is to «*entreprendre* la formation mentale» of those who will have in their hands the powers of decision*» . Training the élite and assure a propaganda to a larger popular audience by creating and sponsoring associations in the field of «*cultural action*» and «*scholarship help*»

Funded Le club de l’horloge in 1974, though this is not their only organ, still the most important as it addresses our High Administration, then the Closor ( for army officers), and the GENE (for teachers)

They wrote in several newspapers, using «*alias*», and they already used the «*Phd*» or «*PhD - honoris causa*» method. The most famous «*Phd*» was Alain de Benoist (in the serious Figaro Magazine) alias Robert de Herte ( in Elements) alias F.Laroche in Europe Action (extreme right). Having a strange diploma in biology - another Alexis Carrel ! - except if you know the «*Institute of Sciences*» he «*passed*» the exams, which is a Nazi cover. Also member of the WACL…

As the «*hype*» was highly recommended in «*The Crisis of Democracy, Report on the Governability of Democraties to the Trilateral Commission*» in 1975, and we can see it’s been improving since, it’s no wonder that we shared our «*journalists*» or «*experts*». You can keep them free of charge.
