Here is the new standards agreed to by lawmakers. They have 5 yrs to come up with this stuff. Thoughts?

U.S. lawmakers have struck a deal on legislation that would raise fuel efficiency standards to an average of 35 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks by 2020, according to weekend media reports.

Detroit's Big Three automakers had long resisted increases in Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, standards, arguing that they would create a crushing financial burden. The current standard for cars, which hasn't changed since 1984, is 27.5 mpg. For the light-trucks category, which includes sport utility vehicles and minivans, it's 22.2 mpg

I think it's a good step forward. It's about time that Congress passed a decent energy bill. Taking steps to fights global warming should really be at the top of this nation's list. This is probably the best energy bill yet, actually (though long overdue). I'm pretty sure that the bill is going to be voted on in the Senate either today or sometime soon. It has already passed in the House according to my sources. The progress being made is cause for optimism. We need to keep this trend going and begin to meet the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. So far things are looking pretty good, comparatively. It's better than nothing.

I will agree with the statement that it is better than nothing, but it still allows too much time for the elimination of the pollution. I guess i am impatient.
