Tim Russert was as good as it gets on network TV, and that is why his body of work should be considered a colossal failure rather than an example for journalists to follow.
He was tough, but not tough enough.
Unlike most TV interviewers, he did ask a second follow-up guestion when a politician dodged his first but he didn't go for thirds. That's why even characters like Dick Cheney appeared on his show when the heat was on. They knew before the interview was over they would get their chance to smooth things over.
If Russert was a prosecuter, every defendant would leave court with slap marks on their wrist.
Most condemning, is the fact that he presided over NBC News as one of its leaders during 7 years of the most corrupt administration this country has known and those government leaders will see their 2nd term through to the end in a few months.
For the next few days we will hear plenty about how much Tim Russert loved his football team, his family, and his country -- and I'm sure that all is true. But I can only pray that the next generation of journalists love this country a little more.
