President told Palestinians, God also talked to him about Middle East peace.
George Bush has claimed he was on a mission from God when he launched the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, according to a senior Palestinian politician in an interview to be broadcast by the BBC later this month.
Mr Bush revealed the extent of his religious fervour when he met a Palestinian delegation during the Israeli-Palestinian summit at the Egpytian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, four months after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
One of the delegates, Nabil Shaath, who was Palestinian foreign minister at the time, said: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."
Mr Bush went on: "And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'. And, by God, I'm gonna do it."
Mr Bush, who became a born-again Christian at 40, is one of the most overtly religious leaders to occupy the White House, a fact which brings him much support in middle America.
Soon after, the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz carried a Palestinian transcript of the meeting, containing a version of Mr Bush's remarks. But the Palestinian delegation was reluctant publicly to acknowledge its authenticity.
The BBC persuaded Mr Shaath to go on the record for the first time for a three-part series on Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy: Elusive Peace, which begins on Monday.

LOL, well we know Mr. William Clinton wasn't very religous, J Kerry says
he wants to be....but the catholic church has a bit of a problem with
his views on Abortion. Oh, a God Fearing President.... you mean like
......Jimmy Carter?
I would say that, of them all, Carter is the one who really believes in the principles & philosophical underpinnings of Christianity. More than the others, religion for Bush is a political tool.... a fantasy with which to beguile the people - like WMD.

I don't believe the "senior Palestinian politician." You should have learned by now JamesP not to believe everything a politician says.

Yeah,... Oh and George Bush is what? A very lousy politician!
I wouldn't call him a "lousy politician", he has won two elections in a row, that should count for something as far as being a politician goes. But don't be fooled into believing something a Palistinian politician says about the President.

What's it called when those in your own party hope you croke?
Of course, I agree that one should not take the word of any politician, Palestinian or otherwise.
There was a time when I naively believed that we could give at least a modicum of credibility to the words of our own leaders, but the big sell job on Iraq happened complete with WMD, spectres of mushroom clouds, mobile weapons labs, specific knowledge of exactly where the weapons were, ties to Al Queada, Powell testifying before the UN, etc, etc ad nauseum.
Anyway, I thought the article was interesting and did sound like our George. It's not beneath him to conjure up God in front of what he views to be a receptive audience.
Didn't he, an American President in the land where religious discrimination is unconstitutional, just pick a Supreme Court Justice because she was the right religion?
Didn't he, an American President just pick a Supreme Court Justice because she was the right religion?
No that wasn't why he picked her. But he has been recieving alot of backlash from his own supporters about his nomination pick. And as a way to help relieve their fears he threw out the comment about where her faith was at. Not that I agree with it.

Excellent post JamesP!
George Bush has God on his side. Bin Laden has God on his side. Sharon has God on his side.
Why do I have this crazy notion that if there is a 'Supreme Diety' ... GOD would be on the side of the those who love their fellow man?

Do you have some kind of psychosis, that allows you to believe, I would for some reason, defend Kerry or Gore? You can take them and Bush................... and well you can fill in the rest>>>>.............
Oh? You have inside information? Do tell!
Yes, I have well placed sources.
Who was it that said: If Jesus were to come back today, the last thing he would be is a "Christian"?
How the religious right has deformed Christianity into something having little connection to the selfless and non-violent philosophy of Christ!
I noted yesterday that the Catholic Church has left it up to individual parishes to decide whether to give communion to politicians that support abortion rights.
I can understand and, to some extent, support the church taking a stand on what they consider to be serious moral issues that violates the sanctity of human life.
How curious that no mention was made of whather to give communion to politicians supporting "pre-emptive war", "shock & awe" mass-bombing campaigns, torture, indefinite imprisonment of political prisoners & blatant war-profiteering.
How can any church not take a stand against this war?
How quickly we could end it if the "Christian" Churches paid more than vague lip-service to ther teachings of Christ!
Who was it that said: If Jesus were to come back today, the last thing he would be is a "Christian"?
Hmmmmmmm.......never heard of anyone saying that before, outside of you.

Well JamesP. I will agree with you there, while not the greatest politician,
J. Carter, was a very religious man....and held to his convictions, Yes because
of his religious values, It had a great deal to do with him not being re-elected....
but I admired him. and still do.
Snow,
It is probably in the nature of both politics and America that "good men don't make successful politicians" here.
How refreshing to find some small point that we agree upon. Maybe there is hope yet for a less divided nation at some time in the future.

again JamesP.....I agree with you. It is a small almost moot point, to agree
upon, but hey its something. I can tell you this, If I seen ANY member of this
board needed help, I would help. I don't "hate" people for their views or
opinions. I don't any way feel that I am more intelligent....hell some of these
post actually show me my falices. There are some really great points, As for
the War in Iraq....Yes I certainly would like to see a clear exit strategy. I just
get rattled a bit when some get so involved in these matters that they seem
to only see it one-sided. One of the posters, wanted me to "back-up" my
views or opinion on a particular subject. Its an opinion. I can't "back up" an
opinion. Anyways, please keep up what I consider to be thought provoking
views from you.

How stupid is George W. Bush?->
Three Texas surgeons were playing golf together and discussing surgeries they had performed. One of them said, "I'm the best surgeon inTexas. A concert pianist lost 7 fingers in an accident. I reattached them, and 8 months later he performed a private concert for the Queen of England."
One of the others said, "That's nothing. A young man lost both arms and legs in an accident. I reattached them, and 2 years later he won a gold medal in field events in the Olympics."
The third surgeon said, "You guys are amateurs. Several years ago a cowboy who was high on marijuana and alcohol rode a horse head-on into a train traveling 80 miles an hour. All I had left to work with was the horse's ass and a cowboy hat. Now he's president of the United States!!
On the subject of Jimmy Carter....
Jimmy Carter on 'Moral Crisis'
(Nov. 10) One of the fundamental principles of this country is the separation of church and state.......the worlds of politics and religion have become intertwined.
Former President Jimmy Carter believes the result is a moral crisis in America and he writes about that in his new book "Our Endangered Values."
He tells The Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler that Washington has become an inhospitable place for those who have a dissenting view or opinion.
"Fundamentalism exists in religious circles and now very overwhelmingly in Washington," he says. "A fundamentalist believes, say, in religious circles, that I am close to God. Everything that I believe is absolutely right. Anyone who disagrees with me, in any case, is inherently wrong and therefore, inferior. And it violates my basic principles if I negotiate with anyone else or listen to their point of view or modify my own positions at all. So that is what has permeated this administration."
Carter presents his views as a "born again" Christian and a former political leader. He says: "I think it's very important for the American people to know that not only has this happened, but it has resulted in a breakdown of the separation of church and state that's been part of our nation's principles ever since Thomas Jefferson espoused this principle as one of our founding fathers."
