Mediachannel.orgAMSTERDAM: Media critics sometimes wonder: is the mainstream media listening? Are journalists, editors and news managers inside the TV networks paying attention to all of the documented complaints and critiques from those of us on the outside?
If your answer is based on most of what you read and watch, the response will be a negative one. The dumbing-down process has had years to implant itself in the routines and templates of electronic newsgathering. The conventions of coverage are well institutionalized with the patterns of simplification and ideological conformity obvious to anyone with a critical eye.

Document Says Oil Chiefs Met With Cheney Task Force

A White House document shows that executives from big oil companies met with Vice President Cheney's energy task force in 2001 -- something long suspected by environmentalists but denied as recently as last week by industry officials testifying before Congress.

Tide Turning in GOP Senators' War View
Bipartisan Amendment Is Rebuff to Bush
By Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, November 16, 2005; Page A06
For the past three years, President Bush has set the course on U.S. policy in Iraq, and Republicans in Congress -- and many Democrats, too -- have dutifully followed his lead. Yesterday the Senate, responding to growing public frustration with the administration's war policy, signaled that those days are coming to an end.

An Iraq Deadline for Bush
By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Friday, November 18, 2005; Page A23
This will be remembered as the week when President Bush lost control over the Iraq war debate. His administration has perhaps six months to get things right. If the situation in Iraq fails to improve significantly, public pressure for withdrawal will become irresistible.

Security & Terrorism
Three days that transformed America
By MARTIN SIEFF
UPI Senior News Analyst
WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- On Thursday, a Democratic national politician for the first time managed to do what former Vice President Al Gore, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, their running mates and more than $150 million of Democratic consulting and campaign resources signally failed to do in more than five years and two national elections: He mauled President George W. Bush.
"The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It's a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of the members of Congress," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania as he called for an immediate U.S. withdrawal from that country.

"The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq. But it's time for a change in direction," Murtha said. "Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interest of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf region. "

"Democrats accused Republicans of orchestrating a political stunt that prohibited thoughtful debate on the issue, and nearly all voted against the measure.
"Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on our present course," Murtha said. He said the GOP resolution was not the thoughtful approach he had suggested to bring the troops safely home in six months.
Murtha, a Marine veteran decorated for combat service in Vietnam and widely respected among his peers, issued his call for a troop withdrawal at a news conference Thursday. In little more than 24 hours, Hastert and Republicans decided to put the question to the House.

Meet The Press today: Thanks Haus, will catch it later today.........
Rep. Murtha:
So I'm convinced that we have to give the incentives to the Iraqis. We have to redeploy our troops to the periphery, and I've sat down with the former secretary of the Army, four distinguished officers who served in combat, and we've come up with a plan which we think will work. Since we've become the enemy, I don't think it'll work. Since they're attacking our troops and we've destabilized the area, I have changed my mind and have come to the conclusion now is the time to start to redeploy our troops to the periphery and let the Iraqis take over.
MR. RUSSERT: But if we did withdraw quickly, it could result in a civil war or a bloodbath.
REP. MURTHA: Well, I'm not sure of that. At one time I thought that, and at one time I thought Iran would have undue influence. But I tell you something, I've come to the conclusion these Iraqis are very proud people. They can run the country themselves. They've had a history of civilization that goes back much further than ours. And I think we just have to give them the incentive to take it over. They're going to let us do the fighting, as long as we're there, and, until we turn it over to them, they're not going to be up to standard. So I'm convinced that they can take over this battle and we could move our people to the periphery, out of danger. Here's the people being killed. They're--in the logistics, in supporting the troops who are out in the field, they--the convoys are being attacked every single day. And, of course, we lost six people yesterday. The troops don't complain. Members of Congress are the ones that can only send people to war and we have to be the ones to stand up, and we have to have a bipartisan approach to this thing. This can't be Republican and Democrat. It can't be recrimination. We got to work this thing out so that we come up with an equitable solution."

Iraqi Leaders Call for Timetable for U.S. Withdrawal
Say Opposition Has a 'Legitimate Right" of Resistance

CAIRO, Egypt (Nov. 22) - Reaching out to the Sunni Arab community, Iraqi leaders called for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces and said Iraq's opposition had a "legitimate right" of resistance.
The communique - finalized by Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni leaders Monday - condemned terrorism but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.
The leaders agreed on "calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops according to a timetable, through putting in place an immediate national program to rebuild the armed forces ... control the borders and the security situation" and end terror attacks

The biggest problem the current Admin and the conservatives have with a "timetable" is that "the insurgents will just wait till we leave, to do what ever the current admin fears they will do"
I say and what is wrong with the insurgents waiting till we leave to do what ever they are going to do?
I have said before, we can say "what we like"- but we will do "what we want- when we want", who says we have to tell the truth, or stick to any calender deadline? So what we we extend the dealine/timetable indefinety, what will the insurgents do- call us liars? and if they do, what is that- compared to what they call us now? The admin's premises are still stupid, and there is no reason we cant do what we want when we want, or say whatever!
I think the admin is running out of one-liners, and time, and some day we are going to ask the President to go out back and put the 45 to his head and do the honorable thing and pull the trigger- or at least go to Bagdad and intentionally walk on a roadside bomb and save the life of an Iraqi or American- it is the least he could do!! :rolleyes:
Of course, Laura could do us a favor and put down the stupid DOG, for us. :D

Forum The Environment :
Dave Weaver for The New York Times:
"Plastic pellets derived from corn at NatureWorks. Some producers have adopted corn-based packaging, as the cost of oil-based products rose.
But that was before the price of oil shot up and companies came under pressure from consumers and investors to find economically sound ways to adopt "green" packaging and other environmentally friendly products and processes. This year, Wal-Mart, Wild Oats Market and many other retailers, as well as food suppliers like Del Monte and Newman's Own Organics, all embraced corn-based packaging for fresh produce."

One quick thought. Reading through the Net, we came across the theory that John Murtha was speaking up for the Military Brass when he called for a troop pullout from Iraq. The theory here is that Murtha wasn't hesitant to go public because -- well -- he had the armed forces big guys behind him. In short, the irony here is that Murtha can talk openly about the Iraq fiasco because he is a voice for his friends in command at the Pentagon who cannot speak out in contradiction to their "comander in chief." They believe that the Iraq War is unwinnable and it is degrading our military capabilities.
Meanwhile, many Democrats who don't have military connections are hesitant, despite the overwhelming support for getting out of Iraq, to call for withdrawal because they are too politically timid.
If this theory is true, the Busheviks have declared war on Iraq, the CIA, the Pentagon Brass, Europe, the Constitution, and the Truth.
Now, what does that say?

Welcome back to the BuzzFlash.com GOP Hypocrite of the Week.
Okay, we could have easily picked Dick Cheney this week for basically calling decorated Marine combat veteran John Murtha a traitor. But Cheney is such a chronic sleaze bag and liar that it gets boring to keep dredging up his hypocrisy. It's like picking low hanging fruit.
So let's welcome Congresswoman Jean Schmidt to the infamous honor role of GOP hypocrisy.
Known by the nickname of "Mean Jean" in her southern Ohio district, Schmidt gained notoriety last week by calling Murtha, a fellow member of the House of representatives, a coward for recommending the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. She even had the audacity to quote from an former Marine Christian fundamentalist she said called her.
Perhaps the former Marine was really Karl "I never put my butt on the line for this country" Rove. Or perhaps it was from Dick "I got five deferments to keep me out of the Vietnam War" Cheney. Or maybe it was George W "Daddy got me into the National Guard" Bush.
Heck, it could have been any number of Bush Administration Chickenhawks. Never were so many who never served their country in combat....so eager to fight so many unending wars.
Schmidt claimed that she was sending a message that "cowards cut and run."
No, "Mean Jean," cowards get up in the House of Representatives and slander Americans who really did serve their country, not like the contemptibly craven fools in the GOP who avoided putting their lives on the line.
Next time you get the chance, "Mean Jean," ask Dennis Hastert about his combat experience. It will be a short conversation.
Because she wouldn’t know sacrifice and honor if it splashed blood across her red, white and blue matching pants suit, Jean Schmidt is this week ’s BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.
Remember our motto at BuzzFlash.com: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.
Catch up with you soon.
* * *
And in an interesting but relevant side note, Schmidt just recently was elected to Congress when she narrowly beat Paul Hackett, a Marine reservist who advocated for getting our troops home now.

Wouldn't taxpayer-financed health insurance amount to a subsidy to the auto industry? Not really. Because most Americans believe that their fellow citizens are entitled to health care, and because our political system acts, however imperfectly, on that belief, tying health insurance to employment distorts the economy: it systematically discourages the creation of good jobs, the type of jobs that come with good benefits. And somebody ends up paying for health care anyway."

And in an interesting but relevant side note, Schmidt just recently was elected to Congress when she narrowly beat Paul Hackett, a Marine reservist who advocated for getting our troops home now.

Paul Krugman wrote:
"Wouldn't taxpayer-financed health insurance amount to a subsidy to the auto industry?

"On Wednesday the International Federation of Journalists said reports of a plan to attack al-Jazeera raised concerns that the US attack on the station’s Baghdad office in April 2003, in which a reporter was killed, was deliberate targeting of the media.
“It is time for the United States to tell the truth about this attack and to take responsibility for its actions, which appear to be [a] gross violation of international humanitarian law,” said Aidan White, general secretary of the IFJ.

Yea, just keep belting it out MAGi. and then when questioned about it....
hide behind the IGNORE BUTTON. to avoid having to be responsible for your
comments........God I really hope that is one thing I got thru to my kids.
to stand behind your comments, your views. be prepared to defend your
statements in debate, or keep your mouth shut. I hope to God, my son and
daughter don't end up like this. IS this the way YOUR son is? Hell, he's half
way there to be in the Democratic party!!!
Heck whats even more disgusting is that none of them are even your VIEWS
or Opinions!! think for your self for once. .....But Michael Moore says.....
But Ted Kennedy says..........Get a life. Your own life. quit copying other
peoples thought and opinions, Well, I guess you can't formulate your own
huh? 75% of the other posters at least come up with their own opinion, I
don't agree with it, but at least they can convey THEIR thoughts. I don't
give a rats butt. the important thing is while your spouting off, People that
have the ability can visualize what a follower you are. I have never had
respect for anyone who doesn't at least have 1 or 2 leadership qualities. I will
admit that I am probably wrong. up front but I have lost ANY respect for
YOU MAGI. In many years in the Military, people like you usually get run
over by subordinates. cause the Subs KNOW they can because the "weak"
hide. the strong FIGHT! strength has nothing to do with muscles or power
in that sense. Strenght is........Oh hell, forget it, you haven't figured it out
by now......you never will. Unfortunetly that is the problem on both our parts
I have no respect for weakness of that sort. (which I probably should). and
you don't have the fortitude to stand up and show a person like me that your
sincere in your thoughts. But you can't because none of it IS your thoughts.
Yea, its best for you to stay down in your hole. Your the little fella that
hides behind his bigger friend and calls people names, praying that your big
friend will keep giving you cover, and protection.

"1990
In Sept.1990, five months after Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait, the White House claims that satellite images prove that Iraqi troops are gathering at the Saudi border. The St. Petersburg Times acquires two commercial Soviet satellite images from the same vicinity, during the same time period, and discovers miles of empty desert. "It was a pretty serious fib," journalist Jean Heller says. "That [Iraqi buildup] was the whole justification for Bush sending troops in there, and it just didn't exist."
1991
Five days after Congress authorizes the use of force in Iraq, the Gulf War begins. On Feb. 28, a cease-fire is declared and the Bush administration decides on a containment strategy that includes sanctions, U.N. inspections and no-fly zones. Richard Perle, William Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz and other neoconservatives are not happy about the decision to keep Saddam Hussein in power, however, and six years later, Kristol co-founds the Washington-basked think tank, Project for the New American Century. (PNAC) Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz are listed among PNAC's supporters.
The Rendon Group is hired by the CIA to help "create the conditions for the removal of Hussein from power." Previously paid $100,000 a month by the Citizens for a Free Kuwait to help market the war, by the time the Gulf War ends, "perception management" expert John Rendon becomes, as James Bamford puts it, "Washington's leading salesman for regime change." In time, Rendon assembles the Iraqi National Congress, helps install Ahmed Chalabi as its leader, and becomes the INC's lead advisor and media guru, with considerable help from New York Times journalist Judith Miller. Between 2000 and 2004, the Pentagon awards the Rendon Group at least thirty-five contracts worth millions -- including a hefty contract three weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks. "

"Is the allegation 'outlandish,' as the White House claims? Or was it a deadly serious option? Until a news organization or British official defies the Official Secrets Act and publishes the five-page memo, we have no way of knowing. But what we do know is that at the time of Bush's White House meeting with Blair, the Bush Administration was in the throes of a very public, high-level temper tantrum directed against Al Jazeera. The Bush-Blair summit took place on April 16, at the peak of the first US siege of Falluja, and Al Jazeera was there to witness the assault and the fierce resistance.
"A day before Bush's meeting with Blair, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld slammed Al Jazeera in distinctly undiplomatic terms:
REPORTER: Can you definitively say that hundreds of women and children and innocent civilians have not been killed?
RUMSFELD: I can definitively say that what Al Jazeera is doing is vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable.
REPORTER: Do you have a civilian casualty count?
RUMSFELD: Of course not, we're not in the city. But you know what our forces do; they don't go around killing hundreds of civilians. That's just outrageous nonsense. It's disgraceful what that station is doing."

Democrats and the War
From THE NATION :
"Everything that needs to be known is now known: The reasons the Bush Administration gave for the American war in Iraq were all falsehoods or deceptions, and every day the US occupation continues deepens the very problems it was supposed to solve. Therefore there can no longer be any doubt: The war--an unprovoked, unnecessary and unlawful invasion that has turned into a colonial-style occupation--is a moral and political catastrophe. As such it is a growing stain on the honor of every American who acquiesces, actively or passively, in its conduct and continuation.
The war has also become the single greatest threat to our national security. Its human and economic costs are spiraling out of control, with no end in sight. It has driven America's reputation in the world to a historic low point. In the meantime, real threats suffer terrible neglect. These include more terrorist attacks, jeopardized oil supplies, rising tension with China, the spread of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction and even natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. All are pushed aside as this Administration pours the country's blood, treasure and political energy into a futile war. In short, ending the Iraq War is the most pressing issue facing America today. Until it is ended, a constructive national security policy cannot be forged.
Americans are well on their way to a full appreciation of the dimensions of this debacle. In an October CBS news poll, 59 percent of citizens surveyed and 73 percent of Democrats now want an end to US military involvement in Iraq. A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Kristina Borjesson, author of FEET TO THE FIRE: The Media After 9/11, Top Journalists Speak Out
"For a while now, there has been a blizzard of articles and editorials, as well as miles of weblog commentary documenting the Bush administration's dubious activities before and during the Iraq war. The details of how members of President Bush and Vice-President Cheney's offices organized and operated an impressive pre-war manipulation and deception machine are old news now. Questions raised about the legality of the war have been followed by stories examining torture, the use of white phosphorous among Iraqi civilians, the long, indefinite detention of alleged enemy combatants, the use of independent contractors for military and intelligence operations (raising serious accountability issues), and other activities that have been part and parcel of prosecuting the war. A great job has been done by many, including mainstream bigs like the Washington Post's Walter Pincus, Knight Ridder's John Walcott, Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay, and independent intelligence expert and author, James Bamford.
For everyone who contributed to this body of information, the next assignment should be clear: What, if any, laws were broken throughout this entire process? Who, if anyone, is guilty of what crimes? If crimes have been committed, where should they be prosecuted and by whom? Ladies and gentlemen, get out your rolodexes or blackberries and call your constitutional law sources, your specialists in impeachment law, in laws governing war and the activities of war -- and maybe even RICO experts. If the Bush administration and/or the U.S. military are guilty of breaking laws, report it. If they aren't, report it. Granted, trying to answer some of these questions may lead to murky areas, but that murkiness must be explored in depth, lest our democracy disappear within it."

"Bush Knew 10 Marines Had Died Prior To Rose Garden Remarks, Didn’t Mention It
Yesterday, 10 Marines were killed in Fallujah by a roadside bomb. President Bush knew about it before he made remarks at 10:45AM in the Rose Garden. From today’s White House press conference:
QUESTION: Can I ask, when the president came to the Rose Garden this morning about 10:45, at that hour, did the White House already know about this attack on the Marines in Fallujah?
MCCLELLAN: Yes, we did. The president was informed about the loss of the Marines last night and those that were injured, and then he was briefed again this morning.
But Bush didn’t mention it. He didn’t want to take the focus off today’s message, the “good news” about the economy. "

IS GEORGE BUSH THE WORST PRESIDENT -- EVER? By Richard Reeves
Fri Dec 2, 8:13 PM ET:
"There are some numbers. The History News Network at George Mason University has just polled historians informally on the Bush record. Four hundred and fifteen, about a third of those contacted, answered -- maybe they were all crazed liberals -- making the project as unofficial as it was interesting. These were the results: 338 said they believed Bush was failing, while 77 said he was succeeding. Fifty said they thought he was the worst president ever. Worse than Buchanan.
This is what those historians said -- and it should be noted that some of the criticism about deficit spending and misuse of the military came from self-identified conservatives -- about the Bush record:
He has taken the country into an unwinnable war and alienated friend and foe alike in the process;
He is bankrupting the country with a combination of aggressive military spending and reduced taxation of the rich;
He has deliberately and dangerously attacked separation of church and state;
He has repeatedly "misled," to use a kind word, the American people on affairs domestic and foreign;
He has proved to be incompetent in affairs domestic (New Orleans) and foreign ( Iraq and the battle against al-Qaida);
He has sacrificed American employment (including the toleration of pension and benefit elimination) to increase overall productivity;
He is ignorantly hostile to science and technological progress;
He has tolerated or ignored one of the republic's oldest problems, corporate cheating in supplying the military in wartime.
Quite an indictment. It is, of course, too early to evaluate a president. That, historically, takes decades, and views change over times as results and impact become more obvious. Besides, many of the historians note that however bad Bush seems, they have indeed since worse men around the White House. Some say Buchanan. Many say Vice President Dick Cheney."

Going along with Snowdog's postulation- these indictments give Bush more credit than he is worth historically- You must remember that the dumber and inadequate we make him look, the dumber and ignorant, ineffectual, and stupid, the populace looks for allowing him to accomplish/ not accomplish his responsiblities as President- I dont want to give him that mush anti-power/ infamy!
I rather say- we can achieve whatever- despite him!
I would rather do like the acient Egytians used to do and just erase him and his memory from all writings, walls, papers, journals-etc..
Other wise, would be to leave him and to credit/discredit him, is to make him into an anti-pariah/ anti-martre.
Let him die an insignificant political death already!
Let us- we the people take up our responsiblities this coming Mid-term elections and clean house- away with all current elected officials, the current electroal college, and lets start anew, and hopfully learn from OUR mistakes

"In statements before the war, and without mentioning him by name, President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Colin L. Powell, then the secretary of state, and other officials repeatedly cited the information provided by Mr. Libi as "credible" evidence that Iraq was training Qaeda members in the use of explosives and illicit weapons. Among the first and most prominent assertions was one by Mr. Bush, who said in a major speech in Cincinnati in October 2002 that "we've learned that Iraq has trained Al Qaeda members in bomb making and poisons and gases."
The question of why the administration relied so heavily on the statements by Mr. Libi has long been a subject of contention. Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, made public last month unclassified passages from the February 2002 document, which said it was probable that Mr. Libi "was intentionally misleading the debriefers."
The document showed that the Defense Intelligence Agency had identified Mr. Libi as a probable fabricator months before the Bush administration began to use his statements as the foundation for its claims about ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda involving illicit weapons."

"The document showed that the Defense Intelligence Agency had identified Mr. Libi as a probable fabricator months before the Bush administration began to use his statements as the foundation for its claims about ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda involving illicit weapons.
Mr. Levin has since asked the agency to declassify four other intelligence reports, three of them from February 2002, to see if they also expressed skepticism about Mr. Libi's credibility. On Thursday, a spokesman for Mr. Levin said he could not comment on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Libi's detention because the matter was classified."

The military tells me that when they were planning the invasion, the administration wouldn't let one of the primary three-star generals in the room."
The president's bubble requires constant care. It's not easy to keep out huge tragedies like Katrina, or flawed policies like Iraq. As Newsweek noted, a foreign diplomat "was startled when Secretary of State Rice warned him not to lay bad news on the president. 'Don't upset him,' she said."
Heaven forbid. Don't burst his bubble. "

An account of bush's words:
"It is true that much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong. As president I am responsible for the decision to go into Iraq," he told a foreign policy forum on the eve of elections to establish Iraq’s first permanent, democratically elected government.
"And I’m also responsible for fixing what went wrong by reforming our intelligence capabilities. And we’re doing just that."

"BuzzFlash: I'd like to quote from page 84 of your essay: “The time will come, and it will come sooner rather than later, when the ponderous pendulum of American public opinion begins its return to its inevitable moderate center. Politicians hiding behind the robes of ministers, policy makers courting a vociferous religious element, adventurers cloaking foreign military ventures in the crusader’s rhetoric, political manipulators cynically using public fears to turn out voters all will be swept back into our nation’s nooks and crannies from when they emerged. This must happen, because American cannot be governed otherwise.” So the $64 million-dollar question is: When will that happen?
Gary Hart: It is happening. It is happening, and what was required, obviously, was that their myth be penetrated. The myth is being penetrated by exposing the corruption in Congress in the majority party. The people who were preaching "faith" and "values" the most cynically were on the take. And I think we’ve just scratched the tip of the iceberg there. The neo-conservatives who use the religious right to justify a kind of crusader war in the Middle East have proved to be misleading at best, and deceptive at worst. Also, the chickens are coming home to roost.
I often refer to Jefferson’s great quote. He used to be questioned about all the things that could go wrong in this new experiment. He said, when the chips are down, the success of the republic depends on the common sense and good judgment of the American people. We all know that, throughout American history, common sense and good judgment often have been swept aside by demagogues and radical movements of one kind or another. But ultimately, always, the salvation of the republic is the returning of the common sense and good judgment of the American people. I think that’s what we’re witnessing now.
BuzzFlash: Senator Hart, thank you once again. With God and Caesar in America, you’ve shown yourself to be one of the key people keeping civil discourse and discussion of public policy on a very high level.
Gary Hart: I appreciate that. Thank you."

Mediachannel.org gave its first Truth in Media award to Helen Thomas, the Dean of the White House press corps, who has been sidelined by the Bush Administration for asking too many embarrassing questions. In accepting the award in New York on December 13, Thomas observed:
"The great journalism we have known is in a state of demise. And even more unfortunate is the timidity and lack of nerve on the part of reporters these days to call them as they see them. No reporter with eyes and ears wide open could have mistaken the fact that President Bush wanted to go to war from the moment he stepped foot in the White House and nothing would stop him...
"... I believe the press could have stopped the mayhem before it started by not defaulting on its one weapon-skepticism. It would have called on reporters to demand every day news conferences to pin the president down and to show how bereft his reasons were to go to war. But reporters were holier than thou caught up in the intimidating – and for some exciting- atmosphere of patriotism and then war itself"
If there was an "Izzie," Helen Thomas would be a logical candidate for its lifetime achievement award.

Pelosi Salutes Senate Democrats on ANWR Vote; Vows to Force House Budget Vote in Light of Day
"I also want to commend my Democratic colleagues in the Senate for delaying the final passage of the immoral budget spending bill. Just four days before Christmas, this Republican Congress wanted to go home for the holidays, leaving a lump of coal in the stockings of American families. That is contrary to the spirit of this holiday season and contrary to the values of this nation.
"Even though this budget passed the Senate by a one-vote margin, because Democrats secured key changes to this legislation, it must now return to the House to be re-examined in the light of day. As it stands now, it hurts the neediest in our country, while providing huge giveaways to managed care and drug companies and the oil industries.
"Democrats believe this Republican bill has the wrong priorities. That is why we will request a recorded vote where all Members return to Washington to make clear their values to the America people. Democrats will work with our allies to fight for a budget that represents the values and needs of all Americans."

"Last Thursday, the authority persuaded the union to end a 60-hour strike by signaling that it would drop its demand for future workers to contribute more toward their pensions - the issue that had caused the talks to fall apart. In exchange, the union indicated that it would agree to the concession on health care to help the authority bring its soaring benefits costs under control. The agreement on health premiums will save the authority nearly $32 million a year."

"Leaders
Bush Was Set on Path to War, Memo by British Adviser Says
"By DON VAN NATTA Jr.
Published: March 27, 2006
LONDON — In the weeks before the United States-led invasion of Iraq, as the United States and Britain pressed for a second United Nations resolution condemning Iraq, President Bush's public ultimatum to Saddam Hussein was blunt: Disarm or face war.
But behind closed doors, the president was certain that war was inevitable. During a private two-hour meeting in the Oval Office on Jan. 31, 2003, he made clear to Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain that he was determined to invade Iraq without the second resolution, or even if international arms inspectors failed to find unconventional weapons, said a confidential memo about the meeting written by Mr. Blair's top foreign policy adviser and reviewed by The New York Times."
"Our diplomatic strategy had to be arranged around the military planning," David Manning, Mr. Blair's chief foreign policy adviser at the time, wrote in the memo that summarized the discussion between Mr. Bush, Mr. Blair and six of their top aides."
"The start date for the military campaign was now penciled in for 10 March," Mr. Manning wrote, paraphrasing the president. "This was when the bombing would begin."
"The timetable came at an important diplomatic moment. Five days after the Bush-Blair meeting, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell was scheduled to appear before the United Nations to present the American evidence that Iraq posed a threat to world security by hiding unconventional weapons."
Remember Powell later rejected that speech since he was given false information?
"The memo indicates the two leaders envisioned a quick victory and a transition to a new Iraqi government that would be complicated, but manageable. ."
"The memo also shows that the president and the prime minister acknowledged that no unconventional weapons had been found inside Iraq. "
"Those proposals were first reported last month in the British press, but the memo does not make clear whether they reflected Mr. Bush's extemporaneous suggestions, or were elements of the government's plan."
"The latest memo is striking in its characterization of frank, almost casual, conversation by Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair about the most serious subjects. At one point, the leaders swapped ideas for a postwar Iraqi government. "As for the future government of Iraq, people would find it very odd if we handed it over to another dictator," the prime minister is quoted as saying."
"Mr. Bush was accompanied at the meeting by Condoleezza Rice, who was then the national security adviser; Dan Fried, a senior aide to Ms. Rice; and Andrew H. Card Jr., the White House chief of staff. Along with Mr. Manning, Mr. Blair was joined by two other senior aides: Jonathan Powell, his chief of staff, and Matthew Rycroft, a foreign policy aide and the author of the Downing Street Memo."
Innocent Ms. Condi Rice.......
"It also described the president as saying, "The U.S. might be able to bring out a defector who could give a public presentation about Saddam's W.M.D," referring to weapons of mass destruction. "
Ah Yes...with a little torture, most people will tell you everything you want them to say........
"The memo said Mr. Blair told Mr. Bush, "If anything went wrong with the military campaign, or if Saddam increased the stakes by burning the oil wells, killing children or fomenting internal divisions within Iraq, a second resolution would give us international cover, especially with the Arabs."
WHAT? No fear of CHEMICAL weapons?
"The document concludes with Mr. Manning still holding out a last-minute hope of inspectors finding weapons in Iraq, or even Mr. Hussein voluntarily leaving Iraq. But Mr. Manning wrote that he was concerned this could not be accomplished by Mr. Bush's timeline for war. "
"We therefore need to stay closely alongside Blix, do all we can to help the inspectors make a significant find, and work hard on the other members of the Security Council to accept the noncooperation case so that we can secure the minimum nine votes when we need them, probably the end of February."
Blix NEVER found what wasn't there, since the inspectors first withdrawal, during Clinton's administration.......
"At a White House news conference following the closed-door session, Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair said "the crisis" had to be resolved in a timely manner. "Saddam Hussein is not disarming," the president told reporters. "He is a danger to the world. He must disarm. And that's why I have constantly said — and the prime minister has constantly said — this issue will come to a head in a matter of weeks, not months."
Despite intense lobbying by the United States and Britain, a second United Nations resolution was not obtained. The American-led military coalition invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003, nine days after the target date set by the president on that late January day at the White House.""

From Media Matters:
ABC and Scholastic release skewed Path to 9/11 "Discussion Guide" for high school teachers to assign to students
http://mediamatters.org/items/200609060008?src=buzzflash
Summary: In conjunction with ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11, Scholastic and ABC have released a "Discussion Guide for the Classroom" aimed at high school teachers nationwide to "[e]ncourage your students and their families to watch The Path to 9/11 and use the accompanying" discussion guide as part of their lesson plan. A Media Matters for America review of the material finds it to be rife with conservative misinformation.
In conjunction with the September 10 premiere of ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11 -- a six-hour "docudrama" reportedly based on the findings of the 9-11 Commission Report -- ABC has teamed up with Scholastic to create a "Discussion Guide for the Classroom" to urge high school teachers nationwide to "[e]ncourage your students and their families to watch The Path to 9/11 and use the accompanying" discussion guide as part of their lesson plan. ABC and Scholastic have reportedly sent out letters to 100,000 high school teachers informing them of the miniseries and accompanying discussion guide. A Media Matters for America review of The Path to 9/11 "resource sheets" and "discussion guide[s]" provided to teachers has found that the material omits critical information regarding the Bush administration's pre-Iraq war weapons of mass destruction claims; falsely suggests a tie between Iraq and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks; gives upbeat accounts of reportedly dire conditions on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan; suggests that military responses to Osama bin Laden by the Clinton administration could have "hinder[ed] the U.S. stance on the war on terror"; and asks students to debate whether the media "hinder our national security."
As Media Matters has previously noted, ABC describes The Path to 9/11 as "a dramatization of the events detailed in The 9/11 Commission Report and other sources" and will air over the course of two nights -- September 10 and 11. In recent days, members of the right-wing media have begun promoting The Path to 9/11 as a film that "really zeros in on the shortcomings of the Clinton administration" and "honestly and fairly depict[s] how Clinton-era inaction ... allowed the 9/11 conspiracy to metastasize."
However, a Media Matters review of ABC and Scholastic's discussion guide has found it to be rife with conservative misinformation.
Iraq
The ABC/Scholastic "Student Resource Sheet 1" omits key information, resulting in a distorted account of pre-Iraq war WMD capabilities; misleadingly suggests a tie between Iraq and 9-11; and minimizes the current role of coalition troops in the country.
{skip}
." But the material omits any mention of the fact that, as we now know, Iraq did not have WMDs. Nor is there any mention of the voluminous and growing body of evidence that indicates that the Bush administration knew, prior to the 2003 invasion, that its claims about WMDs were unsupported.
{skip}
. Further, as Media Matters has documented (here, here, and here), over the past year and a half, substantial evidence has emerged that the Bush administration dismissed clear-cut evidence undermining President Bush's central case for war -- that Saddam possessed WMDs -- evidence that the media have largely ignored.
The material also appears to suggest a link between Iraq and 9-11, by both apparently including Iraq as a "place[] ... that played a role in the events of 9/11," and by later tying Iraq to the "War on Terror."
{skip}
In fact, even Bush -- despite repeated suggestions by Bush himself and other administration members of a link between Iraq and 9-11 -- acknowledges that Iraq had no connection to the 9-11 terrorist attacks. During an August 21 press conference, Bush was specifically asked: "What did Iraq have to do with ... [t]he attack on the World Trade Center?" He replied: "Nothing."
{skip}
According to the Pentagon report, prepared for Congress and released Friday [September 1], death squads targeting mainly Iraqi civilians are a growing problem, heightening the risk of civil war.
"{skip}
"Conditions that could lead to civil war exist in Iraq, specifically in and around Baghdad, and concern about civil war within the Iraqi civilian population has increased in recent months," the report said.
{skip}
Sunday, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) said of Iraq: "We, in fact, are in probably a low grade, maybe a very defined, civil war."
Afghanistan
Similarly, the material glosses over reported conditions in Afghanistan,
{skip}
Debate Questions
The material also offers a series of "Critical-thinking" and "Debate" questions for students to answer after viewing The Path to 9/11, several of which propound conservative misinformation. One such question -- "Did the U.S. airstrikes [on suspected Al Qaeda training camps] help or hinder the U.S. stance on the war on terror?" -- found in the "Debate It" section of the discussion guide, highlights the Clinton administration's response to the 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. No similar questions were asked about the Bush administration's pre-9-11 conduct.
{skip}
one of the questions asks students to debate whether "the media help or hinder our national security." While no context is given for the question to ABC's miniseries, the suggestion that the media could be "hinder[ing] our national security" mirrors assertions conservatives have been making since the onset of the so-called "war on terror." As Media Matters has repeatedly noted (here, here, here, here, and here), conservative politicians and media figures have often accused the media -- with particular venom directed at The New York Times -- of damaging national security by publishing classified information regarding Bush administration counterterrorism programs.

Roger Cressey, former Chief of Staff to the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board at the White House from November 2001 to September 2002, told Scarborough:
SCARBOROUGH: Roger, let me begin with you. There are points of this docudrama that are more drama than fact. But talk about Bill Clinton and the central premise by ABC that he should have done more to get Bin Laden.
CRESSY: Joe, it's amazing, based on what I've seen so far is how much they've gotten wrong. They got the small stuff wrong such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed instructing Ahmed Rassam to carry out the millenium attacks. Then they got the big stuff wrong, this fantasy about how we had a CIA officer and the Northern Alliance leader Ahmed Massoud looking at Bin Laden and they breathlessly call the White House to say we need to take him out and the White House said no. I mean it's sheer fantasy. So, if they want to critique the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, based on fact, I think that's fine. But what ABC has done here is something straight out of Disney and fantasyland. It's factually wrong. And that's shameful.
SCARBOROUGH: But at the same time, doesn't history show that Bill Clinton had several opportunities to go after bin Laden, but the President and his cabinet were afraid to do so because they may offend some people in the Arab world?
CRESSY: Actually, Joe, that had nothing to do with it. If you read the 9/11 Commission report, it makes it very clear. In most of those cases, George Tenet, the Director of the CIA, said because there was single source intelligence it was his recommendation to the President not to take the shot. There was never a case where we had a clear shot at Bin Laden and the decision to take it wasn't made.
What we are seeing is the deliberate concoction of a pernicious national myth, designed to serve the partisan ends of an extremist movement that despises democracy and seeks to install, by stealth, one-party authoritarian rule. Since we're all tossing around Nazi-era analogies these days – after all, we must follow the example of The Leader – this is another one, and far more apposite than any of the historical tripe Bush and Rummy and Condi have been throwing out. The Height of Hubris for the Corporate Media and the GOP, Abusing the Collective Sadness and Pain of America
by Anthony Wade :September 7, 2006
"We are entering the stretch run for the most important mid-term elections in our lives. At stake America, is your very soul. At stake is the precious liberty that so many have fought and died for. At stake is our form of government. Currently, we are governed by a would-be-king. A man who brazenly admits to ignoring over 800 laws in this country. A man who thinks nothing of condoning torture, calling it a "necessary tool" in his never ending war on terror. Our would-be-king has consistently thumbed his nose at the American people. He has reinserted his destruction of the Social Security System, despite the protests of all of America. He has lied right to our faces about always using the FISA Court, until it was revealed that he actually was illegally wiretapping US citizens. What has he done since then? Has he recognized the error of his ways? No, he has gone after the whistleblowers who would dare question the almighty ruler of the "free" world. Why has our would-be-king been allowed to commit these and so many more egregious examples of totalitarianism? Because Congress has abdicated its duty to you, to him.
There has been no Congressional oversight and no checks and balances in this country for the past 5 years and it needs to stop this November. Make no mistake about it though, the ruling party will not go without a fight and that fight is expected to get real nasty, the closer we get to Election Day. We can expect new terror threats, bin Laden tapes, the capture of the number 2 guy in al Qaeda for the 7th time, and possibly even a new "attack". All will be designed to scare the public and get them to vote republican in the fall. Never mind that the GOP track record on terror has actually been abysmal. Never mind that terrorist attacks in which people have been killed or wounded have quadrupled since 2001. The GOP has not only drunk the George Bush Kool-Aid, they have received a transfusion of their blood with it. They have no singular accomplishments to run on. The economy is one housing bubble pop away from a deep, protracted recession. Foreclosures are the highest in history. Bankruptcy is harder to accomplish and millions less people are covered by health insurance. Millions more people are living in poverty and nearly all children are being left behind by a do-nothing Republican Party; or as I like to call them, The Rubber Stamp Gang. The first salvo in the GOP offensive is slated to be fired by the GOP media machine and it consists of the vilest form of revisionist history.
The ABC Corporation has decided to air a two-night docudrama, entitled "The Path to 911." For the uninformed, ABC is owned by Disney, who also refused to run Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 because it was critical of Bush, costing their stockholders over 200 million dollars. They claimed at the time that they did not want to appear partisan, even though at the same time, ABC was carrying Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity on nearly all of their national radio stations.

"IAEA letter calls U.S. nuclear study of Iran "dishonest"[Special Report]
www.chinaview.cn 2006-09-15 15:13:03
Special report: Iran Nuclear Crisis
BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- UN inspectors investigating Iran's nuclear program have written a letter to a congressional committee, claiming that a U.S. report into Iran's nuclear capabilities is "outrageous and dishonest."
The report "contains erroneous, misleading and unsubstantiated information," said the letter, dated Sept. 12, sent to Peter Hoekstra, the Republican chairman of a Congressional committee and the Bush administration, which was leaked to Washington Post.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said errors in the report suggested Iran's nuclear fuel program was much more advanced than a series of IAEA reports and Washington's own intelligence assessments had determined. However, the fact is Iran is far from that capability, the IAEA said.
The IAEA's letter noted five significant errors in the report, including the alleged claiming that Iran is producing weapons-grade uranium. It was the first time the IAEA has publicly rebutted U.S. allegations about its Iran investigation.
The situation is compared with the Iraq war in 2003. The letter "recalled clashes between the IAEA and the Bush administration before the 2003 Iraq war over intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction, and underlined growing tensions over Iran's current nuclear capacities," reported The Scotsman.
"This is like prewar Iraq all over again," said David Albright, a former nuclear inspector who is president of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security. "You have an Iranian nuclear threat that is spun up, using bad information that's cherrypicked, and a report that trashes the inspectors."
The report's author, Fredrick Fleitz, is a onetime CIA officer who had been a special assistant to John Bolton, the Administration's former point man on Iran at the State Department. Bolton, now U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, had been highly influential during President Bush's first term in crafting a policy that rejected talks with Tehran."
