Maude was to America women what Goerge Jefferson of "The Jeffersons" was to American Blacks -- strong, forceful, empowering, liberating and loud. The theme song could have been, "I am woman, hear me roar".

Despite the fact that Maude was probably the most liberal recurring character on the small screen, I deducted .5 from my rating of the show because they played it safe with Maude's sexually. If Maude aired today she would be Gay. Instead we had to wait 20 years for "Ellen" to arrive. I gave it another .5 deduction for showcasing Adrienne Barbeau's boobs.

Honarable mentions to the earlier "That Girl" and "Mary Tyler Moore Show" for breaking the June Cleaver mold by starring single career oriented women with minds of their own.
