This was easily the most interesting piece of Democratic Party news in the past couple of days. Liberal businessman Ned Lamont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ned_Lamont) is considering a challenge to (marginally) Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Lieberman).

That's not the interesting bit. The interesting bit is this: it's causing a huge ruckus in the progressive blogosphere. Probably no serving Democrat makes the liberal skin crawl (http://www.timetogojoe.com/) as much as Joe Lieberman. This is despite a reasonably liberal voting record (http://www.progressivepunch.com/members.jsp?search=selectName&member=CTI&chamber=Senate&zip=&x=42&y=9).

Two camps are forming: one that wants to put as many Democrats in Congress as possible. The other wants to drag the party to the left by punishing Lieberman for his sins. You can watch the battles here (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/7/161232/8451), here (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/1/6/16528/39352), and here (http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/1/7/19036/98193).

My take: I'm not going to loose sleep over how this situation resolves. It's a good thing for the party that this is even happening. The party's showing signs of life, and we're light years ahead of where we were a year ago. If I lived in Connecticut, however, I'd probably throw some money Lamont's way. Heck, give it a few days, I might anyway.

(Interesting GoogleFact: Ned Lamont gave $1000 (http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php?search=1&type=loc&addr=150+Zaccheus+Mead+Ln&zip=06831) to Lieberman's campaign in 2004.)

Forgot to add this bit in from Matt Stoller at myDD (http://mydd.com/story/2006/1/7/19036/98193#53)

If progressives come out and vote in the primary against him, Lieberman will lose. Tom Mattzie of Moveon says that his group has 50,000 members in Connecticut. The Democratic primary in the superheated 2004 election saw only 131,000 voters come out. Right now, the anger at Bush is white-hot among Democratic base voters, and that anger can be successfully deflected to grab some more voting chunks from Lieberman. That image of Bush kissing Lieberman after the State of the Union is enough, and that can be splashed all over TV since a credible challenger to Lieberman will see money pouring in from the internet.

Thanks haus
My initial reaction late last night (rather, early this AM ) was YIPPEE!
However, being a registered voter from CT, I said to me.........from GREENWICH, CT? hummmmmmmmmmm?

1. CT. IS, or was until recently if not presently, #1 per capita in our country, when it comes to income. Fairfield County IS THE wealtiest of counties and county home of Greenwich, CT. Also CT. is home to Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven......ALL LOW income cities........so #1 income means there's LOTS of MONEY in Fairfield county! hummmmmmmmmmm?

2. Former Senator & Governor of CT is Lowell Weiker who is backing Lamont.
Weiker gave us State INCOME TAX......was a Repub, then Independent. Had, as I remember, investments in OIL & pharmeceuticals. He lived in GREENWICH! Republicans as a whole, came to intensely DISLIKE Weiker. I VOTED FOR Weiker and probably would again, because he did SOME really GOOD things..........."for the people". hummmmmmmm?

IS IT POSSIBLE Lamont IS a democratic (humanitarian) candidate? :)

It sure gives one quite a perspective (look at life), since Ive had the good fortune of living in two so DIFFERENT "polar" States these last few years!

Anyone who paid ATTENTION to GWbush's 2000 election promises, esp. how he did NOT believe in NATION building, and would get the troops home..............knows, TALK is MEANINGLESS to MOST POLITITIANS! So I'm skepical and will be reading, listening and watching.

Thanks haus, once more, for the site you provided and please keep us tuned in.

Hummmmmmmmm haus...........Lamont appears to be a "people" democrat..........
Looking good, to this CT. registered voter!

From the Q&A:
Lamont states:

"I believe that we as the Democratic party should and I as a senator would push back against some terrible policies, starting with the wrong headed invasion of Iraq and ill-advised tax cuts, and stand up forcefully for a Democratic agenda, which includes healthcare reform, education reform, and energy conservation. The Senator can speak for himself; I would oppose the nomination of Judge Alito since he jeopardizes a woman's right to choose, I would oppose education vouchers since they undermine our commitment to our public school system, I would have strongly opposed federal intervention in the Terri Shiavo case, I would have pushed for energy conservation and bio fuels as a better alternative than the liquefied natural gas plant in LI Sound; I would oppose diverting social security taxes into private accounts, and I would replace American troops on the front lines in Iraq with Iraqi troops as the first step towards bringing our troops home."
