OK ... somebody had to start this thread. It's one of the proverbial "GOP elephants" in the middle of the progressive room. It's getting hard to move the furniture around. The right wing has so few moral issues they can hang their hat on, they cling to Roe vs. Wade with all their maniacal might. So, let's hit it straight on!
ABORTION. There I said it.
ABORTION. There I said it again.
(I could be a song writer.)
The left call it ... "a woman's right to choose".
The right call it ... "MURDER"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Roe vs. Wade: http://www.tourolaw.edu/patch/Roe/
My opinion is let the law remain. It's a good law. It has limitations and puts the matter in the hands of a woman and her physician. The matter doesn't belong in the hands (or womb) of government.
Anybody want to weigh in?

Freedom, thats what it is all about.
First, "Conservative men" want to push the abortion issue so they can get dialogue started, so they could force a Woman to go to term with thier (the men's) babies- Pretty stupid and simple. But now they want to impregnate a woman and then tell her what to do- all over again. I say we need a few new laws; first and most important is what I call the "American Freedom Law", It should state that "no one what so ever, can say what another American can do with their bodies and thier personal belongings-period!" This is true freedom, it prevents all the other laws from taking hold, as well as it keeps government out of our personal lives. You would think that such a law exists but it does not- not literally, it is just an accepted common sense assumption. But there are laws that "The Middle aged, Well-to-do, White Man" has put in place, to assure his dominance over his servants (us). If someone approaches me on the street and askes me what I am doing- I should be able to tell that person "to go mind their own bussiness!", period! If someone asks why am beating my cat, I should be able to say "Mind your own bussiness!", If someone asks me "why I just came out of that clinic" (known to be an abortion clinic) I will/ should be able to shoot them the finger!. Now that is the America I was raised to expect. Many call this point of view- "Liberal". I call it "progressing to the next state of freedom".
Second, No one can inslave, indept or in any other fasion persuade folks to make themselves indepted to some else- ie. No more credit cards, no more loans, no more borrowing, no anything that would make or allow a person to be forced into this new modernistic slavery, where one will never be able to claim "Freedom".
Third, taking both of the previous into concideration, Government will not respect any marriage, and or subserviant type of arrangement between any amount of persons, and in that manner, out-law marriage and the binding of a person to another.
Respecting that we all want to be free and free to do what we indivdually want, without being punished for our decisions, by those we love and respect, we believe that "Americans" above all other people, due to the way we were raised, deserve to be free to live our lives freely, when and how we choose. Marriage is a tool that has been used to enslave, people to people, as well as jobs, and the need for money, and many other of today's edifices.
Those women who become pregnant, and dont want to be, have the freedom to stop their respective pregnancies, they have several ways to choose from, which can be done quickly, painlessly and safely, without anyone knowing about it, thus by common sense, they have always had the freedom of choice and always will.
It is when they envolve another person, that it is now a public issue, and in the public domain. Many women use pregancy as a tool against men and this is aborrant, and those women should be tried as criminals and dealt with severely.
So then what would be the issue concerning Abortions? If I dont know someone is pregnant, and she aborts, how am I guilty of anything? How am I envolved, how does it become my bussiness?
Abortion is not more cruel than bringing up a child in an environment where he or she was never really wanted. Fighting for the life of that specific child is akin to fighting for a child to be sent to "HELL", and what kind of human being, placed here by "God", educated by "God", loved by "God", would condone, sending an innocent child to "Hell"!?
Some people are too stupid to understand that their beliefs (which they probably got from their parents) are misguided, and self-serving and of little use to this society.
Been there- done that.

I actually have something new to say on the subject! :)
For example: (brace yourself, this is weird)
Right-wing, bible-thumping, doctor-killing Pro-Lifers believe that from the second the sperm penetrates the egg a soul is created. Why? It's God's work. (God also has the patent on hemorrhoids, but that's a different subject.) OK. Cool. But they also believe in Satan. Satan scares the 'bejesus' out of them. So, let's say that when a woman is raped (which happens every 3 minutes in the world) or is a victim of incest Satan is at work. And that's how Satan spreads evil with ........................DEMON BABIES ...... (Who later grow up to be Republicans.)
Lady: Radical & provocative post. I'm only partially in agreement, but I'm impressed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The political perspective:
The abortion issue, for me, is the most complex, legally, morally & philisophically. It is a Rubik's cube without a solution. No remedy fits well. All sides of the issue are wrong & right simultaneously.
Politically, however, the abortion issue appears to me to be the single most powerful item in the Republican toolbox. They use it to capture children's minds early, in Sunday school, and to portray Democrats in simple child-like, black & white terms: they're "baby-killers".
All of their other lies flow from this one and are made more credible to young minds.
It's "enabled" GWB & Tom Delay & the upside-down logic of the Bush administration to creep into power and helped to land us in the tragic state we face today, fighting for the soul of America against simple, ruthless, cold, calculating war & greed mongers with the audacity to claim moral & religious high ground.

JamesP,
There is nothing wrong with Roe vs. Wade. It is a remedy that solves the issue. It limits the terms of abortion and basically places the whole issue in the hands of a woman and her doctor where it belongs. Period. It keeps the government out of a woman's womb.
But, you're right JamesP ... the thugs of the Republican Party without a moral fiber to their being hide behind this 'moral' issue as "compassionate conservatives" and commit crimes.
So here's my question: Do we not fight for Roe vs. Wade and put our energies elsewhere? Or do we do the right thing for woman's rights and fight to hold our ground?
Oh the IRONY..... the PIOUS Righteous, "Christian", "conservative" Neo-cons have NO qualms taking our precious children, erasing their conscience and sending them off to KILL and destroy, in turn possibly being maimed, killed or destroyed mentally................to furthur ENRICH THEMSELVES, in the name of God!........................for ........presently.......... OIL!
Yes we must fight for Roe vs. Wade! No one should make the decision of whether to continue the pregnancy or not, EXCEPT the impregnated competent woman who lives thereafter with the decision she makes............either way.............
Government should have NO Right to compel jurisdiction on such a private personal issue!. How CAN WE get this across to "the people" shortly & pointedly?
To the Righteous Right, Life is precious until "they" have cause to waste it!

MAGI~ You go girl!!! Bravo!
I think it's only fair that if (ready for this) Roe vs. Wade is overturned and women face possible prison time if they have an abortion, (get ready, it's coming) it should be illegal for men to masturbate! (Praise the Lord!) Afterall ... they are spilling and wasting God's seeds of Creation! Each sperm is a potential baby-maker and a part of God! Hallelujah!!!
............and.............AMEN!

From the incredible mind of Senior Bob Marley;
(I shot the sheriff- But I didn’t shoot no deputy, oh no! oh!
I shot the sheriff- But I didn’t shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.)
Yeah! all around in my home town, They’re tryin’ to track me down;
They say they want to bring me in guilty For the killing of a deputy,
For the life of a deputy.
But I say:
Oh, now, now. oh! (I shot the sheriff.) - the sheriff. (but I swear it was in selfdefence.) Oh, no! (ooh, ooh, oo-oh) yeah!
I say: I shot the sheriff - oh, lord! - (and they say it is a capital offence.)
Yeah! (ooh, ooh, oo-oh) yeah!
Sheriff john brown always hated me, For what, I don’t know:
Every time I plant a seed, He said kill it before it grow -
He said kill them before they grow.
And so:
Read it in the news:(I shot the sheriff.) oh, lord! (but I swear it was in self-defence.) Where was the deputy? (oo-oo-oh) I say: I shot the sheriff,
But I swear it was in selfdefence. (oo-oh) yeah!
Freedom came my way one day And I started out of town, yeah!
All of a sudden I saw sheriff john brown Aiming to shoot me down,
So I shot - I shot - I shot him down and I say:
If I am guilty I will pay.
(I shot the sheriff,) But I say (but I didn’t shoot no deputy),
I didn’t shoot no deputy (oh, no-oh), oh no! (I shot the sheriff.) i did!
But I didn’t shoot no deputy. oh! (oo-oo-ooh)
Reflexes had got the better of me And what is to be must be:
Every day the bucket a-go a well, One day the bottom a-go drop out,
One day the bottom a-go drop out
.
I say: I - I - I - I shot the sheriff.
Lord, I didn’t shot the deputy. yeah! I - I (shot the sheriff) -
But I didn’t shoot no deputy, yeah! no, yeah!
Ok I admit- this is self indulgent- but -V-- you got to give me this one!
it just kind of fits- I say-ay-ay-ay-ay

but on the other side of that wouldn't you also have to outlaw women from menstruating? and if that was done what would happen to our population when no one could ever reproduce?

Welcome. Thanks for you contribution.
Menstruating and masturbating can't be compared. During a woman's 'period', the body discards the dead eggs and cleanses itself for the next round. Masturbation is a willful, knowing act of killing LIVE sperm ... killing God's seed!!!
I hope you know I'm not serious, but merely pointing out the absurdity of "Christians" who protest things like the morning after pill. This pill makes abortion a non-issue. Yet, these "Christians" want this issue, need this issue, because their identity is all wound up in a version of "Creation" where saving a fertilzed, microsocpic egg is more important than the horrific deaths of thousands of innocent children in Iraq.
