Hey Haus, I have a technical question.
I'll log in to the site, type something, and when I click on "Submit Reply" it'll make me log in again.???
Isn't once, good enough?;)
Er, hurm...
Is this a new problem or has it always been like that? Have you changed browsers or computers lately? Any chance you've clicked "Disable Cookies" or "Disable JavaScript" lately? Or installed new security software (Norton AntiSomething or something like that)?
I use 3 different browsers and haven't experienced this problem... Any info you can provide will help.
(Deleting the POL cookies and restarting the browser might fix this. If it's not one of the other items, we can walk through this process later.)

Ok, big problem. My laptop Ethernet card is experiencing some problem. I'm not too sure yet, but I think a virus may have destroyed my ethernet driver. It's not connecting to the lan in the office and is wanting to re-install the driver. I hope the card isn't dead.
Until I get this straightened out, I won't be able to get online as much.
I'm not really sure what's up with the re-log in problem, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. Would a screen saver cause it to do that? I haven't changed anything on my laptop since I registered here.
the "remember me" feature that logs you in when you return is based on a cookie that is set on your machine. If you log off it clears the cookie or you may have some other automated system that clears your cookies. Your browser also has security settings that determine how cookies are handled.
just to amplify tin's post: a screensaver or weird ethernet problems couldn't cause the problem. a virus (or virus-like problem) could cause the problem, but it could be something else.
what browser do you use? (internet explorer, netscape, AOL, firefox, etc...) and what version? you can (probably) find the version number under the "help" menu in an item like "About Internet Explorer" or "About Firefox" or whatever.

My system is Win98se, Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800
I don't think I use the remember me button, but maybe I should.
I managed to solve the ethernet problem. I had to go home and get the CD that has the drivers for the PCMCIA card and re-install them, and a number of files from the Win98se CD, and it worked fine after. It was rather weird that they weren't there for some reason.
I don't think I use the remember me button, but maybe I should.
I never even thought to ask about that.
Using "Remember Me" will save you the step of logging in every time you come back to the site. Sometimes it's not obvious what constitutes the act of leaving the site. The downside is that if someone else were to get on your computer and navigate to POL they could *gasp* post under your name. :)
There are a few ways to tell if you're logged in. The easiest is to look for "Welcome, FDRFollower." in the upper right-hand corner under "Move Forward, Merge Left"

Haus, something is seriously wrong. Now I'm getting a message telling me that I'm limited to only 2 messages in 24 hours!
Its telling me that I have to have more than 7 posts, at least 0 karma, and have been a member for a certain amount of time, all of which I know I qualify. But why is it doing that now??
And clicking on remember didn't seem to work.
I haven't messed with my internet cookies settings.
sorry FDR, that message is for new members. You would have gotten that message in error if you tried to post more than twice early this morning while I was working on it but is should not be a problem now.
Please try again and let me know if you still have problems.
Nothing has changed regarding cookies, however.
OK, I can see the website perfect in IE and Opera(?), but when I use
firefox or Flock(based on firefox) the background color and the
formatting is not there????? Any ideas???
:(
I posted on the tech thread about this a while back -- the mime-type for the CSS files isn't recognized by firefox. I don't remember how I figured out the particulars, but the server is sending something like "text/plain" while firefox wants "text/css" or somesuch.
Fixing the problem on the server will take some tinkering. There is a user-side workaround though. If you open the "Edit CSS" sidebar plugin, it forces the stylesheet read, and things look right for days on end.
OK it only stays normal while I keep the sidebar open....ugh...but it looks great.

Haus, can I have my signature back please? Thanks.
Hey FDR,
It's not clear to me why it went away. Try this: go to the "User Controls" link (top left of this page) and click into the "Edit Signature" page. A text editor will show up and your signature may or may not be in there.
If it is there, let me know and I'll do some more investigating.
If it isn't there, put it in, and see if it works.
Another thing to check is this:
1) hit "reply" to this message.
2) in the lower right-hand corner of the text editor is a checkbox that says "Show your signature." Make sure it's checked.
FDRfollower
04/22/06, 07:18 pm
Yep, the signature is there when I go into user controls, and when I click on reply, the "show your signature" is checked.
I still think your system is run by Diebold. ;)

Ok, quick reply worked, but I guess that I've got to click on signature each time I post. :) Oh the work!!
so horizontal? It's a pain to read.
How can it be changed?
Thanks in advance,
magi

Thanx for creating this site, I have been reading people's posts and familiarizing myself with the community. I would like to see a room for NM added to the town halls. I tried top figure out if accomplish this myself but was unable to do so, also I noticed that NY is conspicuously missing from the town halls list. I did notice that there are fifty town halls and the one non-state I found was DC. Thank you again for this very important forum for the continuing expression and development of ideas.
Welcome and thank you very much your feedback, Iasion. We will correct those omissions.
I hope to hear more from you in the days ahead.

Hey Haus, got another annoying question for you again ;)
It used to be, that posts in threads like "laughing liberally" used to show up on the top of the main list, but don't anymore. Is there a reason why they are confined to the comedy room? I miss things sometimes

Wow, 1tinsoldier has a "new" look and name. Its got that cool... masonic look to it.
The eye and the letter may appear mysterious and cryptic but it is actually more personal being that the eye is mine and the letter is my middle initial, exists in my first name, is the first letter of my philosophicaly based diet, was the first letter of the last name of my songwriting alias, was the nickname for my father, and is the symbol for peace when it is formed with the index and middle fingers spread apart.
In this case, V is NOT, however, for Vendetta or Victory. Vendetta is an application of ego which is the ruination of humankind and Victory requires that there be a "loser". No one truly wins until everyone wins.

Gee when I saw saw the change for some reason I was reminded of an old television program (entitled V) about the takeover of earth by reptilian-like space aliens that could take humanoid form. :p
(a continuance in a case study in picking a forum moniker)
thanks Jane of Arc (the artist formerly known as What?) 1tinsoldier, the name, the song, and the image I used, though inspirational, was somewhat cold and sad. Besides, I found another guy in cyberspace using the same name.
The image, which will live on in this post, is a Picasso depicting Don Quixote, who spoke my favorite quote, "To surrender dreams -- this may be madness... And maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be"
It's not easy changing your name on a forum where you have a long history of posts. I had to perform manual update queries to find and replace post references to 1tinsoldier, 1Tinsoldier, tin, tinman, etc..
Alas, there are no nicknames or other derivations for V, which is more easily searchable surrounded by dashes -V-. I did consider ~V~ but the tilde is more of a Jane of Arc trademark.
You have a very sensitive, beautiful eye ~V~. I like the change.
I hope to live up to both of those attributes in the figurative sense. While I shamefully confess to photoshopping out the age lines out of vanity, I am disheartened by the blue-eyed bias in society.
In regards to "sensitivity", it is interesting that now that I have put down the sword of the Man of La Mancha and replaced it with a piece of my real persona I feel like being less combative in my posts. That is only natural when we remind ourselves, as we always should, that there are real people behind the words. I still promise, however, to keep swinging, even at windmills if I consider them harmful.

Hi -V- (its still a little difficult not to call you 1Tin).
Any clue as to the recent distressing spate of spam?
yes, FDR. This form of forum spamming is common now and, I have to admit, quite amazing considering that the programmer of the automation software has to, among other things, defeat the random number generator and email validation.
There are remedies that I will have to implement this week, though I'd much rather catch up on my participation in the political discussions and/or improving the site rather than policing it.

Hi, -V-, In my opinion, the person with the screen name, "democrats suck," should be banned from the house for intentionally insulting and potentionally provocative behavior. I would not have a person in my home who did that.
indeed Jen, but there is a difference between guests in our home and this public forum. For now, the karma system suffices, however, if he continues the one liners that add nothing but agitation I'll have to cut him loose.
A name change would also seem to be in order.

Hey guys!
For some reason, voting on a forum thread wouldn't let me choose anything other than 1 star (bad), and the words had no background color, so that all the words were jumbled up with the messages in the thread. Any reason Mozilla gets a different look than if I use IE?
Among all the different browers IE, Firefox, Opera, Mozilla, etc. what works best, in your view?
I think IE works best (last I heard, that's what -V- uses). That said, I always use FireFox 1.5. The actual reason it looks different in mozilla-like browsers is that your browser doesn't realize that one of the stylesheets is a stylesheet. We were kicking around fixes a long, long time ago, but it fell to the wayside.
If you get stuck trying to rate a thread in a mozilla-type browser, try using the up- and down-arrow keys to pick something other than "1." I know it's yucky, but I think it'll do the job in a pinch.

Could you ask "them" where the starting point of 1 begins?
Let me see how many posts Jane has........ 1291 and Karma is 221.
Let me see what karma does..................... 234...............
That's 13 points each. Isn't that a bit strange?

Who is/are they?
So, farewell, folks
"they" is any member.
The only situation where anyone can give anyone else more than one is if they pass a threshold of posts themselves which increases their karma power. There should only be a few members that have that many posts.
To give you the exact numbers I will have to dig into the code to see what I programmed for that.

Thank you for posting the questions on the forum. That is the best place for questions so everyone can benefit from the answe
below are the many factors that determine how much karma/reputation giving power a member has. Since, 13 is way to much I have eliminated all of the factors below so that now, regardless of post count, seniority, etc.. all members can only give or subtract 1 karma/reputation point from another member. Administrators have a karma power of 2.
Administrator's Reputation Power
How many reputation points does an administrator give or take away with each click?
Register Date Factor
For every X number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Post Count Factor
For every X number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Reputation Point Factor
For every X points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
Minimum Post Count
How many posts must a user have before his reputation hits count on others?
Minimum Reputation Count
How much reputation must a user have before his reputation hits count on others?
Daily Reputation Clicks Limit
How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period? Administrators are exempt from this limit.
Reputation User Spread
How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again? Administrators are exempt from this limit.

Since I gave me until day's end to stop posting I'll post the last e mail I sent you two days ago (which I just received)
Magi, if you are considering not posting anymore because I was not prompt or thorough enough in my replies you are losing it.
1. this is not AOL for $19.95 per month, this is POL for 0 per month. No one is payed here and the ad revenue does not even cover the monthly costs. Hence, there is no tech support. Only me, when and if I can get around to it. I work on this site in cycles throughout the year, and this isn't one of them. Right now I am working on projects that pay the bills.
2. this forum is not about me, so whether I reply or who I agree with should have nothing to do with anyone's participation. You have friends here, you have things to say, and the world needs to hear them. So snap out of it girlfriend!
Now, to satisfy your obsession with karma points: I tried to copy the numbers with the config questions but it didn't work. If I remember correctly, you got 1 extra point altering power for every couple of months as a member, 1 for every thousand posts and 1 for every 100 points of your own karma. Again, I don't know how your's got to 13.
It is, however, good that you pushed me to look into that because the difference in the karma altering power between members was too high and thus, not fair. It's just that I would have preferred to put it on my "to do list" rather than work on it this weekend, but thank you for caring enough to bring it to my attention.
Thanks -V-,
But as I told WP, I've pretty much "been there, done that" on it ALL.
jr......... & Shadow really brought that to my attention as I decided to just go back & cut & paste.
Time to get on with other things as you must do to keep things going.
Thanks, sincerely, for POL,
I'll be checkin' in to see the progress,

I've had that happen a lot too ever since we got the new server. It hasn't happened to me today, fortunately, but yeah that can be pretty annoying sometimes.
These last few of posts answer some of the questions I've had about the karma system. I remember when I first came back here people's karma would go up 4 points when I gave them a positive click. After a while it would get to be 6 points, and last time I did (before this series of posts) it would be 8 points that I could increase someone's karma. Funny thing, huh? I would be quite content with just being able to make a 1 point change.:)

I haven't experienced that once, but since the system "remembers" my login it happens automatically without any delays.
I'd like to know if it happens to more people and, if so, are you trying to login manually?

FDR and V,
I started the "Boy" stuff by refering to PGOP this way. It was meant to be demeaning and insulting to him.
I have also specifically requested that he call me "Boy", it is perhaps the only thing he has ever done upon my request.
I do not disagree with you. It may be racist and disgusting. But if anyone... then I am at fault here.
(I cannot be sure, but in the event that someone is considering my feelings, please do not worry. People, of PGOP's stature can call me much worse than "Boy" and I will not be offended in any way)
Regarding error messages, "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later".
