Would I be pushing it if I suggested adding a "who's online?" and a PM function to the forums? I know you can see the status on a post but it's more cumbersome to look for people online that way.

Pushing for features lies somewhere between fine and encouraged, though chasing -V- around with with a pointy stick would probably be taking it too far. :)

There is a "who's online" feature under "Quick Links" at http://www.progressivesonline.com/online.php which used to be active. We'll see if we can nudge his Vness into turning it back on.

I'm not 100% sure that private messages are useful. Might be a good topic for discussion. I guess my biggest worry is the thousands of gooey mash notes FDR would send me. :)

Cheers,
h

When will I learn less is more? The other Moderator, his Supreme Hausiness, rarely speaks. But when he does, I always read it (and usually get a chuckle), BECAUSE he is brief and to the point and funny. So, I am going to try to ... nah ... who am I kiddin'. I'm a blabbermouth!

Anyway, it would be cool to get his -V-ness to consider turning it back on, if he's not too swamped with work.

Shutting up now. :jumpjoy: I'll just dance instead. :jumpjoy: :jumpjoy:

before I can consider adding or activating individual features, POL will be moving to a new server with better hardware and more memory in the weeks ahead. That may include an upgrade of the vBulletin software. The veterans here will remember how painful a process that is, since the highly customized aspects to this site have to be re-integrated.

I have many other sites to move as well. I'll keep you posted.

Hmmm. There are advantages with Private Messages on sites that have larger numbers of regular posters. Not so much with our small group. Keep it out in the open for everyone to see.

(although I do like the idea of sending gooey mash notes to Haus though, whatever those are) :loveit: :D

I have to ask, how much use does the live chat room actually get? Nobody is ever there when I peek in every now and then.

I am open to turning on PMs.

Live chat is another issue. If folks do their talking live, no one but those in the room can share in their brilliant observations, and even then, their words of wisdom dissapear in a few seconds.

one or two posted meetup times per week would work, but I'd like to upgrade the chat software to a more exciting interface.

If I might be so bold, is there a feature that will put a warning on the front page to tell you that people are in the chat room?

Also, I would like to see a small box in the corner that will list all members and sightseers who are online.

Should there be a fixed time per week to get together "live", just so its consistant?

I used to check the chat often during my first week but like FDR said, it's almost always empty. I don't think a fixed time is a good idea, lets just simply try to keep the window open. Is it accesible through MIRC?

Also, chat in some ocassions is better because sometimes a discussion about some topic takes weeks when it could have taken an hour or two. If you're worried about losing the valuable parts, you could just log it.

Just make sure you delete the logs if you see a man in black suit before he can invoke the PATRIOT act :p

the features you are discussing are available. Some of them would slow up the site but will become more viable on the new server.

Alright. New server? so I assume we're gonna be working bare-bones for awhile here while you work out the fine details? when's this happening exactly?

when's this happening exactly?
if i was retired, i'd say today. As is, i can only say, as soon as a window of opportunity opens up for me.
