In a country of controlled, censored, corporate radio, only a big gun like Springsteen can do this and get heard:

Bruce has really had his neck out there for several years now but the media and the collective right-wing has largely ignored the bait, choosing to focus on "chicks" they figured they'd have better luck with holding over the fire (as in Dixie, Linda Rondstad, Whoopie Goldberg, Streisand, etc..)
The Boss connects with some of their working class people and they want no part of that fight.
It's no coincidence that I've strongly identified with Bruce's music all my life, even before I, probably even Bruce himself, even cared to think about the institution of politics. Back then, politics was the struggle of everyday living and the government was just a power game played by White men dressed in black exchanging money in big white buildings.
I think we both learned that it isn't enough to sing about it,
that before we can change the rules,
we've got to get in the game.

Actually, here's an inside piece of gossip from my friends who know the Boss back in Jersey.
He was pretty pissed-off that he put his neck out for Kerry and the guy bailed on the voters. So, he's moving away from characters like that and closer to his heroes of American working families and democratic values.
