Today I heard one of the geniuses of talk radio (John Dale, 1100 AM in AZ) rant about the environmentalists who are blocking some company from chopping down trees. His point was that if you don't let them build a road through the forest "what good is it" since you can't drive through and see the trees. Of course, in true conservative fashion, it never occured to him that the trees might serve some other purpose aside from his own satisfaction -- to the planet, the environment, and dare I say, the furry little critters!

Was it tongue-in-cheek or was he actually this stupid? It's not like it's unprecendented but, hell, that's grade A stupid to me.

Also related: What's your opinion on forestry? can our forests be worked with instead of exploited and still turn economical benefits?

Yes, its possible to have some selective cutting, as long as its done to clear out older trees and dead wood. Its a win win situation for nature, and the logging economy benefits too.

On the opposite extremes, you have the huge clear cuts, which are obviously insane (unless reforestation is done soon after), and those who lock up forests, and as a result, creates conditions where fires burn so hot because of all the collected dead wood, that the soil is ruined.

Thats a quick synopsis from an article I saw some years back. Plus, just going off memories of working on my fathers 85 acre woodlot in Maine. 8)

woa, that's some woodlot, FDR.

It's cool when someone comments on a thread that is over 3 years old. It makes the archiving worthwhile.

I do remember the broadcast, however, and the host was as serious and dumb as a tree stump.

Sure, some threads are update-able. WafflePudding is the one who bumped it up though.

If you enjoy nature videos, I plan on putting a video up on YouTube, that I made when I was a broadcasting student in the mid 90's of the countryside around Skowhegan and Madison Maine during the autumn set to some nice relaxing music.

When I get a video capture card I'll notify you.

"dumb as a tree stump" *snicker* he he
