Read the new Ben Barnes book (ex-Lt Gov and ST house speaker in TX)
"Building Barnes, Burning Barns"
He talks about first coming in contact with Sam Rayburn in 1960, the powerful TX Dem Speaker of the House in DC at the time. This all dates back to Nixon and the Joe McCarthys training him before he (Nixon) trained Rove, Rumsfeld, and Cheney.

"Well Mr. Speaker," I asked him, "what kind of president do you think JFK will make?"
Rayburn "...I like Kennedy and think he has some bright people around him...But that is not what is important...what is important is that Nixon got his ass beat."
Rayburn "Nixon is going to try and come back...I want you to promise me one thing, you will do everything you can to keep him from coming back...if he ever gets elected, that man will destroy the presidency."
