"If the first 100 hours is going to be characterized by an increase in the minimum wage and improved health and education benefits for Americans, that's fine," said Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), a liberal firebrand who ran for president in 2004 and has announced for 2008. "But then let's talk about the second hundred hours, because we cannot let this war be lost. We cannot abandon the troops in the field to temporizing."

To most Democratic lawmakers, such activism presents a quandary. House Republican leaders spent years trying to placate their conservative base with agendas built around opposition to same-sex marriage, antiabortion votes and tax cuts, said Sen.-elect Benjamin L. Cardin (D-Md.). The partisan tone enraged Democrats and ultimately alienated moderates and independents, who swept the GOP from power in November after a dozen years in control.

"The Democrats have to be careful not to fall into these traps that I think paralyzed the Republicans," Cardin said.

Bullshit Benji!

Anyone who would characterize an aggressive agenda against this war as partisan politics destined for failure is not only out of touch on this issue but out of touch with this country as well.

George Bush is about to announce his new bizarro world plan of "sacrificing" MORE troops in Iraq. What was once just a fool's politics has now reached the level of criminally insane.

We need to send more troops to war alright.
To war against the policies of this administration.

to war Democrats,
to war liberals,
to war progressives,
to war hippies,
to war pinkos,
to war Republicans
to war conservatives,
to war rednecks,
to war journalists,
to war students,
to war little old ladies,
until there is No War, No more.

The time for tip toeing around the issue is over. It is time for "boots on the ground". A march to the White House.

Sadly, what this President thinks he learned from Vietnam is not that we stayed too long, but that we weren't strong enough. But what that war really demonstrated is that citizens can be heard if they shout loud enough.

Our troops have fought long enough overseas based on one man's politics of fear. Now it is our turn to do our part here at home.

Bush says "we need to fight the terrorists there so we don't have to fight them here".

I say WE NEED TO FIGHT THE TERROR TACTICS HERE
SO OUR SONS & DAUGHTERS DON'T HAVE TO FIGHT HIS WAR OVER THERE

This is how it was done then:

This post is how lazy liberals like me do it now. But it just ain't cutting it anymore. :protest:

Talk about MORE! I thought Haus might like this.

This is just the rumor mill, so far.

Word is, is that 2 other carrier battle groups are being sent to the Persian Gulf area soon, so that there will be 4 in total.

For you non-navy types, do you know what a carrier battle group is?

For you non-navy types, do you know what a carrier battle group is?

Ummm no, but I looked it up. Carrier Battle Group is now refered to as Carrier Strike Group. According to the US Navy: "First, it is important to note that there really is no real definition of a strike group. Strike groups are formed and disestablished on an as needed basis, and one may be different from another. However, they all are comprised of similar types of ships."
Typically:
A Nimitz class carrier crew of roughly 3200 plus air wing of another 2500
One or two Ticonderoga class cruisers crew of 360 each
Two or three Arleigh Burke class destroyers crew of 323 each
One Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate crew of 176
Two Los Angeles class attack submarines crew of 140 each
and a combination oiler, ammunition and supply ship crewed (if Supply class) by about 680.
So lets see you're looking at two strike groups, say 10 ships and around 8500 crew for each group. Holy sheepdip! thats 17,000 more people! Bush wants a what "surge" of 21,000 troops? 17,000 is 81% of 21,000 but that doesn't count right? Because these are naval personnel and not ground troops. So if this is true and Bush gets his "surge" what you're really looking at is an additional 38,000 humans in harms way.
Not that it'll do any good but I am off to write a not too happy letter to Congressman Hinojosa!

Wow. That's a lot of floaty toys in a little, little bathtub.

When I left the Gulf in '03, we had 2 battle groups in place up by the "T" in "Al Kuwiayt." Add in a buzillion dhows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhow), a ton of Oman<->Iran smugglers, Iranian submarines, and hundreds of oil tankers, car carriers, and general cargo ships and it's extremely dangerous.

I was just there in July -- went from Bahrain out the Strait of Hormuz. It seemed busy, but not insane.

For trivia buffs: Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates now have a crew of a little over 200, plus an air detachment of 2 SH60-B helicopters and 30-odd crew.

(On reflection, I bet they put at least 2 of the battle groups in the Gulf of Oman, just outside the Arabian Gulf in the lower right-hand corner.)

Wow! Give Lion a gold star for doing his homework. :sunny:

Can you say Gulf of Tonkin 2?? If we don't impeach Cheney soon, the "incident" is going to happen, sure as shootin'. A call to your congressperson is needed.

The memory of 9/11 is "a little distant now," says Strauss, who believes it may take another dramatic event before the country is truly galvanized and therefore capable of true sacrifice. "If we have that, the nature of our nation's response could surprise us."

Few Americans share Iraq war's sacrifices

By Gordon Lubold / Christian Science Monitor

WASHINGTON - Ask Navy corpsman Adam Shepherd what he wants Americans to know about his service in Iraq and he says it boils down to one thing. "Just don't forget that we sacrificed a lot to be out here," says the medic, stationed at Camp Taqaddum, Iraq.

I wondered where the questioning "Truth of 9/11" threads were and came upon this thread, so..........

My take: We better get the troops out of Iraq and home, to help us here, because a new 9/11 is looming..........
